Understanding Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity, according to GIA (Gemological Institute of America) standards, refers to the absence of inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external imperfections) in a diamond. The GIA clarity grading scale evaluates these imperfections under 10x magnification and categorizes diamonds into six primary clarity grades, further divided into subcategories:

GIA Clarity Scale:

  1. Flawless (FL) – No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
  2. Internally Flawless (IF) – No inclusions, only minor surface blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
  3. Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 & VVS2) – Minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to see under 10x magnification.
    • VVS1: Inclusions are typically only visible from the pavilion (bottom).
    • VVS2: Inclusions are slightly more visible but still very challenging to detect.
  4. Very Slightly Included (VS1 & VS2) – Minor inclusions that are somewhat difficult to see under 10x magnification.
    • VS1: Inclusions are difficult to detect.
    • VS2: Inclusions are easier to see but still minor.
  5. Slightly Included (SI1 & SI2) – Noticeable inclusions that are visible under 10x magnification and might be visible to the naked eye.
  6. Included (I1, I2, I3) – Obvious inclusions that are easily visible to the naked eye and may impact durability.
